Tips for UTV Rides with Your Dog

Apr. 8 2020 Miscellaneous By ___

If you want to take your UTV trips from good to great, you can take your dog along for the ride. You can enjoy the serenity of nature with your best friend by your side or get some help with hunting. To make sure that both you and your dog have a safe UTV trip, we at McKibben Powersports Lake Wales have created the following guide. If you're looking for UTVs for sale in  Kissimmee or Lakeland, FL, visit our dealership to get a tour of our inventory.

Transporting Your Dog

You can’t really let your roam roam freely in your side by side since there’s a chance of them jumping or falling out of the moving vehicle. They could also try to snuggle on your lap which, while precious, can seriously hamper your ability to steer properly. When taking your dog along in your UTV, use a crate. Secure it in place to the UTV bed by using tie downs, since a crate can slip off even at slow speeds.

Pay attention to the weather before you head out. If it’s going to be a cold day, throw on a kennel cover to protect your four-legged friend from the cold. If it's going to be a hot day, you’ll want to ensure there’s plenty of ventilation otherwise your pooch might get hot and stuffy.

Before you take a proper UTV trip with your dog, make sure they’re comfortable with the crate. Introduce them to the crate in a calm and positive way. Place a treat or their favorite toy inside it so they associate it with fun. Once there’s a degree of comfort with the crate, take short trips in your side by side around the neighborhood. Build up the speed and the length of the ride until you reach normal journey levels.

Prep for the Trip

If you’re going to be taking your dog out in your UTV, you need to pack some supplies. You’ll need a water bowl to ensure your dog is well-hydrated. Use a collapsible bowl to save space. Bring a pet first aid kit so you'll be equipped for minor health emergencies. Make sure you have something for them to eat as well.

There are other things you can carry which aren’t crucial but can enhance your pet’s comfort. For example, an LED collar light will help them see well even after the sun sets. Booties can protect paws from rough terrain. A brush can help get out stickers and other items that cling to your dog's fur. You can also add a windshield to your side-by-side. It'll help block debris and wind to make the ride more enjoyable for you both.

Tips for Longer Trips

Some days you might want your best friend along for a quick trip. Other times, you’ll need them by your side for an extended period of time. That’s doable as long as you take some extra precautions.

Before you set out, make sure your dog has had a vet visit. You don’t want to be surprised by health issues when you’re off-road far away from help. Plus, the stress of traveling can exacerbate health situations. Make sure your dog is healthy and able to travel.

Once you’re sure of their good health, pack well. Pack any necessary medications, plenty of their favorite food (changing their diet can cause digestive issues), and a bed they feel comfortable in so they get sound rest when needed. Make sure you stick to their routines as much as possible, like regular meal and rest times. This will keep their stress levels low.

We hope this guide will help you have many adventurous trips with your best bud!
